We Mourn our Chairman
Peter A McKenzie TWP Chairman
It is without doubt that Peter was a unique and magnificent man who was, tireless in the development of TWP, believed in the importance of his family, and his religious faith. The early death of his beloved daughter Tracy was a cruel blow that resulted in the set up of the Tracy Crawford Foundation and from this his passion to help cancer sufferers is now well documented. The achievement of the award in 2008 of Pride of Wearside was a proud moment, even more so when he himself had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He was given 6 months but went on for almost 2 years to defy medical predictions.
Quotes from the Sunderland Echo
“The legacy he has left is invaluable. He was a treasure.” Margaret McKenzie
“Peter was a true fighter. He was an amazing man” Tony Jeffries Olympic Boxer
“He was a shining example of the power of the human spirit. Whatever adversity his dreadful illness threw at him, he refused to accept defeat.” Ian Laws Echo Sports Writer
The Sunderland Echo – a personal comment
“Many of us at the Echo were fortunate to know Peter over the past few years. He was a true gentleman, unfailingly polite and cheerful, despite the effects his illness had on him. He was also Sunderland through and through, a man of our city – and the city is poorer for his passing. Our thoughts are with his family.”
